Chemistry

A Purdue University Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) in Chemistry degree will provide you with knowledge of the basic structural units of matter—what things are made of, their properties, and how they act and interact with other matter.

Chemistry bridges a number of scientific fields, like physics, mathematics, biology, medicine, and earth sciences. Knowledge of the nature of chemicals and chemical processes provides us with valuable insight into physical and biological phenomena. Chemistry touches nearly every aspect of the basic human experience—from the food we eat, our health, the energy we produce and consume, and the natural environment around us.

As the study of science in the 21st century has become increasingly interdisciplinary, fundamental problems focus on the chemical nature of matter. You might choose to explore chemical biology, for example, which applies logic and methods from chemistry to the study of complex and challenging questions in biology, which has been inspired by the growth of the biotechnology industry.

As a chemistry student, you will have an opportunity to explore, discover, and learn chemistry through coursework, lab assignments, and research projects with your peers and with faculty mentors.

Earning a Chemistry Degree

You can complete a substantial portion of the general education and prerequisite courses for either a BA or BS in chemistry at IUPUC, including some courses in the major. You will transfer to the Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology at Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis (IUPUI), however, to finish required courses and other program requirements.

When you begin a degree in chemistry at IUPUC, you will work closely with your academic advisor to develop a personal plan of study, identifying and completing courses that can be completed at IUPUC and developing a timeline for transferring to IUPUI. You must be in good academic standing to transfer to another Indiana University campus.

Career Options

The BA in chemistry is recommended if you want knowledge of chemistry for careers in business, dentistry, environmental science and policy, law, medicine, or allied health fields.

In contrast, the BS in chemistry prepares you for careers in industry as well as graduate study in medicine, dentistry, or other fields.

With a chemistry degree you can work in:

  • Basic and applied research and development
  • Quality control
  • Technical sales
  • Analysis and testing
  • Teaching
  • Other positions requiring strong analytical skills, including technical writing
