Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management

The Indiana University Bachelor of Science (BS) in Tourism, Conventions and Event Management  (TCEM) degree will give you the knowledge and skills needed for working in the diverse, dynamic hospitality industry.

The wide-ranging curriculum in the TCEM program will prepare you for management positions at large and small event and sports venues to conference centers, resorts, hotels, and other public and private facilities.

The industry centers on attracting, managing, and serving the needs and expectations of business groups, families, and others, often travelers who are away from home. In addition to an eye for detail and a desire for variety, you will develop competency in business administration, budgeting, communications, strategic planning, marketing, management, and related areas.

The TCEM field is comprised of all aspects of the tourism, convention, and event experience—including transportation, food, accommodations, technology, and many other services required to stage corporate conventions, exhibitions, trade shows, conferences, tours of cultural destinations, sporting events,  and entertainment productions.

Many students in the program take advantage of opportunities in Indiana to help manage large events, like the Indianapolis 500, the 2012 Super Bowl, the Final Four NCAA tournament and other large sporting events, Indiana Black Expo, and other nationally regarded events and conventions that are held in Indianapolis and around the state.

Earning a TCEM Degree

You can complete a substantial portion of the general education and prerequisite course requirements for the BS in tourism, conventions and event management at IUPUC, including some courses in the major and internship opportunities.

You will transfer to the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), however, to complete remaining courses and program requirements.

As you begin the TCEM program at IUPUC, you will work closely with an academic advisor to develop a personal plan of study, identifying appropriate courses that can be completed at IUPUC and developing a timeline for transferring to IUPUI. You must be in good academic standing at IUPUC to transfer to IUPUI or another IU campus.

Career Options

With a TCEM degree, you will be able to choose from hundreds of career possibilities.

You might direct events for a corporation, a nonprofit association, a sports organization, or an entertainment enterprise. You might manage permanent or temporary exhibits or attractions at a museum, work for a city’s convention and visitors bureau, plan and direct group travel operations, oversee parades and festivals, or manage a restaurant.

If you have a strong interest in technology, production companies that produce large-scale concerts, trade shows, and other mega events may be right for you.

Creative marketing and sales positions in the hospitality and travel industries may also be right for you. Incentive trip planners are often employed by large sales organizations, like insurance companies. You could also become a travel and tour operator, focusing on domestic or international travel and trip planning.

  • Arts, cultural, educational, or heritage attractions
  • Destination marketing and travel operations/management
  • Beverage or catering management
  • Professional or amateur sporting event management
