The Indiana University Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English degree at IUPUC will help you explore the diversity and richness of the English language, in all its historical, persuasive, and expressive range!

IUPUC’s award-wining liberal arts faculty are engaged in teaching and research encompassing many sub-disciplines of English, including creative writing, composition, literacy, and American, Christian, English, modernist, and other literatures.

From instruction in basic freshman composition to involvement with some of the most advanced research published by our faculty, we can help you tailor a program of study that fits your personal and professional dreams. You will learn to:

  • Research, analyze, and interpret an array of written material
  • Consider the socioeconomic, political, and historical contexts surrounding the author’s frame of reference
  • Explore the evolution of English into its modern form and how it will continue to change and adapt with our global society in the future

You can complete the IU bachelor’s degree in English with concentrations in creative writing or literature.

Along the way, you can get involved in campus life and extracurricular opportunities—like publishing your writing in the university’s literary magazine, Talking Leaves, writing articles for The Voice (our student newspaper), presenting your research findings at national conferences, reading your work to attentive audiences, or joining a local writers’ community or club. Career Options

Large and small business enterprises of all types seek graduates with outstanding communication, writing skills, analytical ability, and critical thinking who can write and speak clearly and look at things from the perspectives of others.

An English degree from Indiana University is a broad, versatile degree that will provide you with a number of excellent career options.

  • One of the most obvious is work as a writer/author, whether in fact-based technical writing or coordinating the development of large research grants and proposals, investigative journalism, creative writing, or reporting the latest news. Editing, proofreading, ghostwriting, and blogging are other good choices.
  • Careers in television, radio, and newspapers, both digital and broadcast, are a possibility because today’s web-based services need ever-fresh content to inform and engage listeners, viewers, and readers.
  • Teaching is another career path, whether in a middle or high school or at the university level.
  • Working as a public or media relations specialist, marketing manager, or a corporate communications director are also possibilities.
