English *

The English major is an exciting journey into the study of language, literature, and our culture. The major is divided into six different concentrations: Creative Writing, Film Studies, Linguistics, Literature, Writing and Literacy, and Individualized Studies. Many of the courses needed for a major in English with a concentration in Literature or Creative Writing are available at IUPUC. See the listing of Degree Programs (majors and minors), and the list of degree requirements and course descriptions for a more detailed view of the options in English.

Special Opportunities

IUPUC affords students many special opportunities such as participation in the campus literary magazine, Literalines. The magazine invites submissions of original poetry and fiction and works collaboratively with the creative writing courses offered at IUPUC. Writers whose work is selected for publication will be invited to present their work at a Literalines public reading. There is also an annual essay contest open to students in the Elementary Composition Program (W130, W131, and W132); the winner is selected by the English faculty and recognized with an award. Other scholarships and awards are available to students who are selected to work with the faculty on special projects (writing and technology, web-based writing instruction support, etc.). Writing fellows internship courses are available for students who wish to work in the Writing Center as peer tutors, and opportunities to do original collaborative research with the faculty are available.

Careers

A degree in English provides you with skills for a variety of positions in business, research organizations, educational settings, publishing companies, financial institutions, and in the cultural, entertainment, communications and health care industries. A web search or conversation with the faculty will yield even further suggestions for translating this very useful degree into many different careers.

You may decide to use your background in English as a preparation for graduate work in a wide variety of fields including law and secondary or university level teaching. But the skills you learn in English-familiarity with the language, the ability to read analytically, confident, intelligent self-expression-will serve you in almost every aspect of your life.
