Psychology Degree Requirements Checklist

General Information

Students may complete a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Either degree prepares students for a wide variety of careers or admission to graduate programs in Psychology, Social Work, and other disciplines. There are only a few differences between the programs and students should discuss which is best for them with their academic adviser.

Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Psychology

Degree Requirements

The degree requirements for the B.A. and B.S. in Psychology at IUPUC may differ somewhat from the requirements through the School of Science at IUPUI.

Area I English Composition & Speech Communication

Two courses in English composition of at least 3 credits each and 3 credits of speech are required. A grade of C (2.0) or better must be obtained in both composition courses (a C- does not count)

Area II Foreign Language

Bachelor of Science Degree: No foreign language courses are required.

Bachelor of Arts Degree: First year proficiency in a foreign language is required. American Sign Language (ASL) may be taken to meet this requirement.

This requirement may be met by (1) completing a first year sequence (8-10 credit hours) in a single language with a passing grade; (2) completing a second-year or third-year course with a grade of C or higher; or (3) taking a placement test and placing into the 200 level or higher.

Area IIIA Humanities/ Social Sciences/Comparative World Cultures

Four courses totaling 12 credit hours are required. HIST H114 is a required course for all students. Choose one course from List H; one course from List S; and one course from List C.

Note: Some courses may appear on more than one of the lists. A cross-listed course may apply to only one of the required areas specified by the lists.

Area IIIB Junior/Senior Integrator

One 3 credit hour course from a list of Junior/Senior Integrator courses is required for this area. See your faculty advisor for details.

Area IIIC Physical and Biological Sciences

A minimum of 4 courses totaling a minimum of 12 credit hours. At least one of the courses must be a laboratory course. Students must obtain grades of C- or higher in Area IIIC courses; a single grade of D+ or D will be allowed for one course only. The following courses cannot be used to fulfill this requirement: BIOL N100, N120, N200, CHEM C100, GEOL G130 and all agriculture courses.

Choose from: Astonomy, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, and Physics. For Bachelor of Science students, 2 of the 4 courses must be biology and/or chemistry courses. Recommended sequences include: CHEM C101-110 or CHEM C105-106, or BIOL N212-213 and N214-215.

Area IIID Mathematics

One course of at least 3 credit hours in mathematics is required for the Bachelor of Arts Degree. At least two courses beyond algebra and trigonometry, totaling a minimum of 6 credit hours, are required for the Bachelor of Science Degree. One course in computer science or computer technology is required for both degree programs. Students must obtain grades of C- or higher in their Area IIID courses; a single grade of D+ or D will be allowed for one course only.

Area IV Psychology Requirements

The psychology major requires 40 credit hours of selected course work. Students may wish to consult with a psychology faculty advisor to select courses appropriate to their future career plans. No grade lower than a "C-" will be accepted in any course used to fulfill the major requirements.

General Electives: Approximately 33 credit hours or the number needed to complete a minimum of 124 total hours for graduation. No more than 6 credit hours of clinical, athletic, or performing arts course work will count towards the total.

Additional Notes: (1) The following courses do not count for credit toward the psychology degree: AGR 101, BIOL N120, EDUC X100, X150, X151, X152, U205, all Indiana University remedial COAS courses, ENG W001, MATH 010, 001, 110, 111, 123, 130, and 132. (2) Students must complete 32 hours of coursework at the 300 level or higher as an IUPUC student. (3) Other requirements and restrictions described in the IUPUI Bulletin apply.
