The university uses several screening devices in the registration process to help ensure that a student
is eligible to enroll for the term or for a particular course.
Holds/Negative Service Indicators
Your division or other units, such as the Dean of Students, may place
a hold on your registration which will block your enrollment unless cleared. In most, but not all, cases
this hold is used to ensure you have met with your academic advisor. Divisions have the option of giving
permission on a term-by-term basis (which means you have to get permission each time you) or on may lift
the restriction permanently (usually after a student has submitted required material or has met
performance stipulations such as raising the gpa). Check with your division to ensure you are eligible
to register. You may also review your checklist status using OneStart. Select the View My Holds option
from the Self-Service tab. Students with holds will have a division name and phone number appear below
their division and major information.
Class Permissions
Any course which has "PERM" next to the class number requires specific approval for the student to
enroll. Contact the division which offers the course to determine if you are eligible. In some cases you
may need to complete paperwork in the division in order to enroll in internships, student teaching, etc.
Should the division approve your eligibility, it will load an appropriate code to the registration
system which allows you to register.
Subject, Catalog Nbr, Class Nbr, Description: These fields give information
specific to the class permission you have been granted.
Permission Type:
A (Add) class permission allows you to add the class regardless of enrollment limits.
P (If Space) class permission allows you to add the class only if there are seats available.
Date used: This date will appear when you used the class permission by
registering for the class.
Expiration date: This is the last date you can use this class permission.
If you still want the class and did not register for or add it by the expiration date, you will need to
contact the course division again to request permission to enroll.
Students can view any class permissions by visiting the My Permissions link from the Self-Service tab
of OneStart. My Permissions may also be checked from within the Register for Classes link from the
Self-Service tab of OneStart.
Division Code Authorization
Any section which has a division code listed beside it (i.e. 11213 BUS) is restricted to students who
are officially enrolled in the division offering the course, such as Business or Nursing. If you are not
enrolled in the division and wish to enroll in the class, contact the division which offers the course
to determine if you are eligible. Should the division approve your eligibility, it will load an
appropriate code to the registration system which allows you to attempt to register for the course.
Division code authorization does not guarantee the student a seat, it simply tells the registration
system to let the student enroll should a seat be available.
Students can view any class permissions by visiting the My Permissions link from the Self-Service tab
of OneStart. My Permissions may also be checked from within the Register for Classes link from the
Self-Service tab of OneStart.
Class Standing Restriction
In some cases divisions require students have a certain class standing (sophomore, junior, etc.) In
order to enroll in a particular course. This restriction is typically listed in the course note in the
Schedule of Classes. If your class standing does not meet the minimum requirement, call the division
offering the course to determine if you are eligible. Should the division approve your eligibility, it
will load an appropriate code to the registration system which allows you to attempt to register for
the course. Class standing authorization does not guarantee the student a seat, it simply tells the
registration system to let the student enroll should a seat be available.
Class standing reads the number of credit hours a student has completed with Indiana University. This
means that visiting students and graduate non-degree students will not automatically meet the class
standing requirements as they typically have no or too few IU credits. These students should call the
division offering the course and provide the necessary information. The division will determine if the
student is eligible to proceed, subject to space availability.
Students can view any class permissions by visiting the My Permissions link from the Self-Service tab
of OneStart. My Permissions may also be checked from within the Register for Classes link from the
Self-Service tab of OneStart.
Prerequisites Checks
In some cases, students are expected to have completed a course or received an appropriate score on a
placement test before being allowed to enroll in a course. These prerequisites are usually listed as a
course note in the Schedule of Classes (i.e. P: W131 would signify the students must have completed
W131 or its equivalent before enrolling in the course).
The registration system does not yet screen most registration requests to determine if all listed
prerequisite courses or tests have been satisfactorily completed. The divisions reserve the right to
review class rosters following registration to determine if individual students are not eligible to
attend. In such cases students may be asked to withdraw from the course or face being administratively
withdrawn. This is also true for any course which requires "Consent/Permission of Instructor Required."
If you attempt to enroll in one of the designated courses and are eligible, you will see no difference
in the registration process.
If you attempt to enroll in one of the designated courses and are not eligible, you will see "prereq"
appear next to the section number. Contact your academic advisor for more information.
Financial Holds/Encumbrance
Students who owe money to the university (any campus) or who have a hold placed on their record from
the university's office of Accounts Receivable Management Services (formerly Student Loan Administration)
may be blocked from registering until the problem is resolved. If the message reads Bursar Encumbrance,
contact the Office of the Bursar. You may also review your student
account through the View my account link from the Self-Service tab of OneStart.
