If you are participating in the Indianapolis ceremony earlier in the day, bring your academic apparel with you for the Columbus ceremony. All academic apparel should be turned in at Columbus North High School after the Columbus ceremony.
HONOR CORDS (top)
Academic distinction cords awarded by the university will be presented to graduates on Commencement day. If you have earned honor cords, IUPUC officials will have them ready for you at Columbus North High School on the day of the Columbus Ceremony and will assist you in putting them on your gown before the ceremony.
ANNOUNCEMENTS (top)
Order your personalized announcements though the Office of Gift Development and Alumni Relations. Please see the enclosed Graduation Invitation Order Form and return it in the postage paid envelope by Friday, February 29.
LOCATION OF CEREMONY AND DIRECTIONS (top)
The Ceremony will be held at the Columbus North High School Gymnasium. Click here for driving directions to Columbus North High School.
SEATING AND PARKING FOR THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED (top)
If you or a guest are in need of handicapped seating and parking on Commencement day, please contact Jeanette Barker in the Office of Gift Development and Alumni Relations at (812) 314.8635 at least one week prior to the ceremony.
ARRIVAL AT COLUMBUS NORTH HIGH SCHOOL (top)
Please plan to arrive at Columbus North High School by 6:00 p.m. on May 11. Park in the parking lot to the north of the school and enter through the William L. Stearman Athletic Complex entrance. Follow the signs to the auxiliary gymnasium and register at the table for your division (for example, Division of Business). There are no dressing rooms, and there is no secure area to leave personal items. Therefore, please bring only your academic apparel with you and leave personal items elsewhere.
PROCESSION (top)
The procession line will assemble in the auxiliary gym at 6:30 p.m., according to the procession order that you will receive in the mail shortly before graduation. The procession will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. in the main gymnasium. Graduates will be seated, in alphabetical order, by division, in a special seating area on the gymnasium floor.
RECEIPT OF DIPLOMAS (top)
Diploma covers presented during the ceremony will not contain actual diplomas. December 2007 graduates should have already received their diplomas; August 2008 graduates would not receive diplomas during this ceremony, due to classes they have yet to complete during the summer sessions.
You will be called up to the stage in alphabetical order, by division, to receive your diploma cover. You will receive your diploma cover from Vice Chancellor and Dean Jay Howard. Accept the diploma, shake his hand, and turn with him to have your photo taken. Then proceed across the stage to shake hands with your Division Head. Then proceed off the stage to the area designated for you. You will know exactly where to go by following the graduate in front of you. After all of the graduates have crossed the stage and are seated again, Vice Chancellor Howard will close the ceremony.
SUGGESTIONS FOR DRESS (top)
Men should wear dark suits. Black shoes and socks, white shirts, and dark, plain, four-in-hand ties are preferred. In exceptionally warm weather, men may be more comfortable by not wearing a coat under the gown. Women should wear dresses and dark shoes. Corsages should not be worn.
TASSEL PLACEMENT (top)
Candidates for first degrees wear tassels on the right sides of their caps until degrees have been announced by the IUPUC Vice Chancellor and Dean. After the conferral, bachelor and associate degree candidates grasp the tassel with the left hand and transfer it to the left side of the cap. Candidates who already have a degree wear their tassels on the left side.
ROBE RETURN (top)
Following the recession, you will be led back into the main gymnasium for photos of you, friends and family. Following the informal photo session, please return your cap and gown to the boxes marked for this purpose in the auxiliary gymnasium.
GRADUATION PHOTO (top)
During the ceremony, you will receive congratulations from the IUPUC Vice Chancellor and Dean, Dr. Jay Howard. Photographers will capture this moment in a photo. An order form will be sent to you in the final Commencement letter approximately one week prior to the Commencement Day Ceremony.
IUPUC ALUMNI ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIP (top)
Graduates will receive a free one-year membership in the Indiana University Alumni Association, which includes membership in the IUPUC Alumni Association. Click here for information about the New Grad 2-for-20 Plan.
