Advising
Business advisors are available to provide students with the direction and support they need to achieve
their goal of successfully completing a Bachelor of Science degree in business. The Division of Business
encourages students to see an advisor every semester to ensure that they are on track to complete their
degree in the anticipated time frame. However, the student is ultimately responsible for planning his or
her program and meeting degree requirements.
Students who have not yet completed Integrative Core see the pre-business advising team. Those who have
completed Integrative Core are advised by faculty in their declared area of concentration.
To schedule an appointment with one of the business advisors, please contact the
Division of Business.

Dean’s List
Top students in the Division are named to the IUPUC Dean’s list each fall and spring semester.

Outstanding Student Awards
An Honors Convocation is held each spring semester to celebrate the accomplishments of IUPUC
students, faculty and staff over the course of that academic year. Top students in the Division
of Business are honored in the ceremony, including the following:
Outstanding Student in Business
Outstanding Student in Accounting
Outstanding Student in Computer Information Systems
Outstanding Student in Finance
Outstanding Student in Human Resources
Outstanding Student in Management
Outstanding Student in Marketing
Not all awards have a recipient every semester, and the awards are subject to change at the discretion
of the Division. Historically, award recipients have also received a small stipend through the generosity
of our partners in the local business community.
Award recipients are chosen based on scholarship, leadership, service to the campus, and service to the
community. Students who are accomplished in several categories typically are chosen over those who are
exceptional in only one or two.
No application is necessary; the Division identifies top students in that academic year and will
contact those for whom additional information would be helpful so that all criteria can be considered.
Forms & Applications
Graduation & Commencement
Graduation
Students should notify the Division of their intent to graduate at least one year prior to their
intended graduation date by completing a
Graduation Application. Once the application is received,
the Division will begin regular audits of the student’s record to confirm that they are on track to
graduate in the desired semester.
Commencement
The ceremony for the IUPUC campus is held once a year in May (historically on the evening of Mother’s Day).
Students who graduated in December of the previous year, May graduates, and those who plan to finish in August
are eligible to participate in the commencement ceremony (in other words, the ceremony includes graduates for
the entire academic year). Information about commencement, ordering graduation announcements, class rings,
and other graduation-related material is sent to all eligible students in February by the
Office of Gift
Development & Alumni Relations.
Diplomas
Diplomas are available for student pickup approximately 12 weeks after the end of the student’s
final semester. Graduates are notified when diplomas are ready for pick-up by the
Office of
the Registrar. Students who need an official copy
of their transcript showing that their degree has been awarded should go through the
Office
of the Registrar.
Transferring to another campus
If you are considering finishing your business degree at a campus other that IUPUC, be sure to inform your
advisor of this as you are planning your schedule.
Transferring to a non-IU campus
Students who plan to transfer to a different college or university to complete their degree are
encouraged to take introductory-level general education courses in a variety of areas while at
IUPUC. Courses that are most likely to transfer between schools include ENG W131, math courses,
and 100-level courses in the arts & humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. In
business, Integrative Core pre-requisite courses often transfer as well.
Only an advisor at the campus on which you wish to complete your degree will be able to tell you
for sure how courses taken here will transfer to their program. IUPUC business advisors may provide
suggestions, but be aware that there are no guarantees of transferability.
Transferring to one of the Kelley schools
Students who wish to transfer to Indianapolis or Bloomington to complete a Kelley B.S. in Business
should be sure to inform the IUPUC business advisor of their intent as they plan their schedules.
Both programs are competitive in their admissions processes, with Bloomington being most exclusive.
Students who plan to transfer to Bloomington should keep in mind that one semester must be completed
at the Bloomington campus before they can apply to the Kelley school.
In planning a schedule, students should focus on completing ENG W131, BUS X100, MATH M118 and MATH M119,
which are required for preliminary admission for both Bloomington and Indianapolis. A variety of
general education courses are also good choices.
Both schools post information about their admission guidelines and deadlines on their websites;
students who plan to transfer should become familiar with these criteria.

Internships
What is an internship?
An internship is an opportunity for students to apply theories and skills learned in the classroom to
a real-world work environment. Interns gain valuable experience that not only enhances the value of
their education, but also provides opportunities for networking and resume-building that can lead to
better employment opportunities upon graduating. Interns are placed in companies that can provide
experiences within the organization that will expose students to the professional level of work and
decision-making that relates to their area of concentration. A student intern acts as an employee
of the company, with assigned tasks and responsibilities and a supervisor to whom to report. A
faculty advisor is also assigned to each intern to ensure that the student is gaining appropriate
academic value from the experience.
What does an internship entail?
Internships in business may be either paid or unpaid, and can be completed over a fall, spring or
summer semester (summer internships typically are spread across both summer sessions). Interns
must put in at least 150 hours, or approximately 10-12 hours per week.
I want to do an internship. What’s my first step?
Students who wish to do an internship should submit an Internship Proposal Form to the Division
by the deadline below. You do not have to have a site in mind yet; this simply notifies the
internship coordinator of your intent, and we will confirm your eligibility and walk you
through the process. The earlier you inform us of your intentions, the more time we have
to help you position yourself for an excellent internship experience.

*Proposal forms will be accepted after the deadline; however, those received late are less likely
to result in placement in the desired semester.
What are the eligibility criteria for an internship?
To be eligible for a for-credit internship, students must:
- Have completed at least 56 credit hours toward the business degree
- Have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA
- Have completed Integrative Core
- Be admitted to the Division of Business
- Have completed one full semester at IUPUC
In addition, students are encouraged to have completed at least one course in their area of
concentration. Specific pre-requisite coursework and skills are determined by the company
hiring the intern. Remember that the more coursework and experience in your concentration
you have, the more you can contribute to the internship site, and the more adept you will
be in relating the theory of the classroom to your internship experiences.
How do I find an internship site?
Looking for an internship site is a good way for students to develop job search skills in
preparation for finding long-term employment in the future. Thus, we encourage students to
research potential internship sites of their own accord. Put those networking skills you
learned in BUS X220 to work! Suggested tactics include:
- attend job fairs
-
attend events where you can meet potential contacts (Columbus Young Professionals,
Chamber of Commerce events, IUPUC Alumni sponsored events, professional seminars, etc.)
- seek out opportunities to network with employers in your desired field
- join professional organizations as a student member (AICPA, IMA, AMA, etc.)
- search job sites for internships
- ask family and friends for leads
The Division has relationships with a number of companies that serve as internship sites, and we
will work with students to find placements that are mutually beneficial to the student and the
company whenever possible; however, students should not rely on the resources of the Division
alone to find a suitable site.
