Spring 2008 credit hours up almost 5%

Credit hours taught for the spring 2008 semester at Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus
have increased 4.6 percent compared to the same period last year, according to unofficial enrollment
figures. Student headcount increased 2.6 percent.
Credit hours are up 22 percent since fall 2004, marking almost four consecutive years of steady growth
for IUPUC. The current increase follows a 4.9 percent rise in credit hours for the fall 2007 semester
and 4.2 percent rise in credit hours last spring.
Enrollment figures are not official until approved by the President of Indiana University.
Dr. Jay Howard, vice chancellor and dean of IUPUC, said, “There is a positive energy on our campus. I
see it among our faculty, among our staff, and among our students. I think our spring enrollment numbers reflect that.”
“After receiving our first major state appropriation last spring, IUPUC added eight new full-time faculty
members and five Future Faculty Teaching Fellows at the beginning of this academic year to help sustain the
growth we’ve experienced,” he said. “We are now in the process of hiring additional full-time faculty for
next year to accommodate future growth,” Howard added.
IUPUC has worked with the community to design academic programs and implement campus improvements that are
attractive to students and responsive to southeast central Indiana’s educational and economic needs. These
enhancements include the creation of new degree programs, an increase in the number and quality of faculty
members, improvements to student services and campus programming, the facilitation and promotion of student-led
organizations, and a dedication to a more welcoming campus environment through the creation of a Diversity
Cabinet and an Art Advisory Board.

Library in Learning Center receives new name

The library housed in the Columbus Learning Center and jointly used by Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus, the
Purdue University College of Technology, and Ivy Tech Community College has a new name: University Library of Columbus.
The library continues to be administered by IUPUC.
Dr. Jay Howard, vice chancellor and dean, said, “IUPUC, the Purdue College of Technology, and Ivy Tech are collaborating in
many areas and the students of all three institutions are benefitting in the process. The University Library of Columbus is
symbolic of our joint efforts to provide the best possible education for our students and best possible resources for our region.”
In addition to providing materials and assistance to students, faculty, and staff of the three institutions, the University
Library of Columbus is open to any resident of Indiana. Patrons have access to books, magazines, periodicals, and the many
types of assistance provided by librarians.
Ivy Tech Chancellor Dr. John Hogan said, “We are pleased that our institutions can come together to support the community with
its needs in the areas of continuing education and certification. This library is another symbol of the collaboration for which
this community is known. It reflects the values of the community.”
Steven Schmidt, director of the library, said, “Our close working partnership requires us to be in a constant state of alert for
better ways to address the ever-changing needs of our many clienteles. Already in our first two-and-a-half years of joint operation,
we have reworked, refined, and redirected our activities to offer the same services to everyone who comes in our door. That is our goal.”
Materials that were previously in the separate libraries of IUPUC and Ivy Tech have been brought into a combined collection in order
to provide the easiest access to all visitors. “This is the epitome of scholarly and community engagement through collaboration,”
said Ivy Tech Librarian Darby Fanning.
