ESL professor presents paper in Japan

Aija Pocock, clinical assistant professor of ESL Education at IUPUC, recently presented
a paper entitled “Integrating Pedagogical Grammar Instruction into Teacher Education” at
the Nagoya Gakuin University in Nagoya, Japan. Co-presenting with her at the Symposium on
Second Language Writing was Colleen Ijuin, a former colleague of Pocock’s from Georgia
Perimeter College in Atlanta.
The focus of the presentation was infusing K-6 teacher education programs for English as a
Second or Foreign Language instruction with inquiry-based grammar instruction. Dr. Pocock is
applying Ijuin’s visual/organic approach to grammar by infusing linguistic inquiry into teacher
education for native speakers of English who are preparing to teach English as a Second/New
Language in the K-6 setting. Ijuin’s and Pocock’s approach bridges the gap in pedagogical
grammar instruction for native speakers of English, who have an intuitive awareness of English
but often lack the structural knowledge, and non-native speakers, who often know the rules but
lack fluency.
The conference drew participants mostly from different Asian countries, where teaching English
is just now moving to the elementary grades, with teachers often lacking professional preparation
in English as a Foreign Language instruction.

English professor published

Katherine V. Wills, assistant professor of English at IUPUC, has co-written
an article with Kim Lovejoy and Steve Fox. “From Language Experience to
Classroom Practice; Affirming Linguistic Diversity in Writing Pedagogy,”
will appear in an upcoming issue of the journal Pedagogy, published by Duke
University Press.
The article contends that writing students should be encouraged
to discuss, examine, and incorporate their home language dialects along with
prestige dialect (standard English) into the academic writing experience. By
doing so, students gain a respect for and understanding of language diversity,
registers, and development.

‘Birds’ coming to IUPUC library

The publisher of “Brock’s Birds of Indiana,” a CD-ROM book on local species, has agreed to
provide a site license for the IUPUC Library and the complete catalog is in the process of
being converted and loaded on the library network. This represents the first time
IUPUC has purchased a site license to an online product that will be shared with the larger
IUPUI campus.
Brock’s Birds of Indiana is a treatise of information encompassing all 409 species of birds
known to have occurred in Indiana. Each species account contains a histogram and summary of
historical occurrence, details on status and distribution in Indiana, and a discussion of
population trends. Because of the extreme depth of coverage afforded each species, Brock’s
Birds of Indiana is only available in an electronic format; if printed and bound, the text
would total nearly 1,000 pages. Dr. Kenneth Brock, the author, is a retired professor of
Geology and dean of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University Northwest in Gary, and has
studied and documented Indiana’s avifauna since 1970.

 Dr. Jay Howard |
|
Vice chancellor’s address published

IUPUC Vice Chancellor Jay Howard’s presidential address to the North Central Sociological Association
(NCSA) was published in the August 2007 issue of Sociological Focus, the official journal of the NCSA.
The address was originally delivered at a joint meeting of the NCSA and the Midwest Sociological Society
in Chicago in April.
In the address, Dr. Howard argues that given the increasing demands of accreditation agencies, state
legislatures, and the public that it is important for professional associations to examine and expand
their roles in developing a disciplinary culture that takes teaching and learning seriously.
He analyzes the content of the most recent annual meeting programs of the five major regional associations in sociology
and the American Sociological Association (ASA) to determine the extent to which the associations address
teaching, professional development, undergraduate students, graduate students, and research on higher
education. He finds tremendous variation in the extent to which the annual meeting programs address these
topics and identifies best practices in each area. He also found a significant increase in the focus on
teaching and learning in the annual meeting programs of the NCSA and the ASA in the past 15 years.
Both his election as NCSA president and the content of his presidential address are indicative of Dr. Howard’s
national leadership in the scholarship of teaching and learning in sociology.
