America Reads

The America Reads Challenge began in 1997. President Clinton set aside $2.75 billion for the program. The program includes college students working in elementary schools. College students are on a Federal Work Study Program.
  • Students must take a minimum of 12 credit hours with a 2.5 GPA or better.
  • Students must complete a limited criminal history form.
  • Principals will interview students before they are hired.
  • Students must sign in and keep a time sheet of hours worked.
  • Original time sheet will be mailed, with students furnishing envelopes, stamps and address labels.
Students are to work as tutors in the classrooms. Their job is to help children become better readers. Most tutors work with Early Steps or Reading Recovery Programs. Many help with Accelerated Reader.
