Finding a Work-Study Job

Purpose of Federal Work-Study Program
The Federal Work-Study Program was established by Congress as part of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. Its purpose is to promote part-time employment for students with financial need and to help students in meeting their educational costs, provide relevant work experience, and to build relationships between IUPUC and the Columbus community.

A Federal Work-Study award is packaged as part of the student's financial aid and is awarded through the IUPUC Office Of Student Financial Aid Services (OSFAS).

Work-Study Eligibility Requirements
The FWS award is part of a student's financial aid package which is distributed by the OSFAS.

Eligibility for work-study is determined by the information submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The information on the FAFSA allows the IUPUC Financial Aid Office to determine your financial need while attending college. Students interested in being considered for a work-study award must indicate this on the FAFSA.

To be considered for a work-study award, a student must:
  • Be a United States citizen or permanent resident
  • Demonstrate financial need based on the information provided on the FAFSA to the Financial Aid Office
  • Be a current or incoming undergraduate or graduate student at IUPUI
  • Be enrolled in the required number of credit hours
The OSFAS awards work-study to students with financial need during the Academic Year eligibility period (Fall & Spring semesters) and summer eligibility period (Sessions I & II). Students will know that they are eligible to participate in the work-study program if a FWS award is listed on their financial aid award letters and/or on-line on their OneStart accounts. The amount listed indicates the amount of money that a student can earn in a work-study position during a particular eligibility period.

Finding a Work-Study Job
There is an application that needs to be filled out and returned to the OSFAS office (you can also pick this application up at the OSFAS located in student services).   Once application is received an email will be sent to division directors to see if there are positions available on campus.  If a student has already found a position they wish to utilize work-study they can work with that director to start the hiring process.  Types of positions range from working in the math or writing center, in administrative, education or many other exciting opportunities! Most on-campus departments/offices qualify as work-study employers. Off-campus agencies/organizations may qualify as work-study employers if the agency/organization can be classified as a government or not-for-profit entity AND has an active work-study contract with IUPUC (one can be created if not already active).
