General Studies

The General Studies Degree Program is specifically designed for students who want a degree that combines IU high academic standards with a great level of flexibility and convenience. Both the Associate of Arts in General Studies and the Bachelor of General Studies allow students to customize their own degree programs. Students may select courses from a broad range of subjects to tailor their course work to personal interests, goals, or career needs. Earning a degree in general studies allows students to apply for and pursue advanced degrees in a variety of fields, increase earnings, advance in careers, build confidence, and become role models for their children.

Special Opportunities

Credit is given for competencies gained through courses taken at other accredited institutions, military services, life experiences, and examinations. In addition, there is no time limit for acceptance of credits previously taken. Certificates and minors can be incorporated to meet degree requirements while enhancing a student's education. After students are admitted to a general studies degree program, they will meet with an advisor who will assist them in developing a plan of study to meet their objectives.

Careers

Completing the Bachelor of General Studies gives students basic preparation for many careers and graduate programs. General Studies graduates work in various professional fields, including business, education, government, health care, law, public relations, real estate, and the social service field. Many B.G.S. students have gone on to graduate programs, earning master's degrees and doctorates in such fields as anthropology, business, divinity studies, education, fine art, international affairs, law, library science, management, nursing, public health, and social work.
