Lab Policies

The Computer Labs located on the Columbus Campus provide services and resources for a variety of users including students, faculty, staff, and guests. In order to offer an efficient and user-friendly environment, we ask that you observe these guidelines for using the computer resources on campus.

General

Computer labs must be scheduled by IUPUC faculty or staff. The rooms are available for use on a first-come, first-serve basis. Regularly scheduled classes are given first priority. Labs are available for student use when classes are not scheduled. Public computer access is available at the Information Commons in Room 1600 in the Learning Center.

The use of network connections by non-university computers is prohibited. Due to potential security risks and abuses, the use of wired network connections for other than University-owned equipment is prohibited.

Wireless connections for student computers are available throughout the campus.
The Columbus campus has wireless capabilities throughout.

Academic computing has priority over non-academic computing. Anyone using a computer for non-academic activities is expected to leave when all computers are in use.

There is assistance available for help. Problems with a computer, printer, or monitor should always be referred to the IT Support Center in LC 1511 or at extension 8600. Do not attempt to fix problems without assistance.

Noise should be kept to a minimum. The computer labs are a classroom/study/work environment. Conversation and other activities should be conducted so as to create as little noise and distraction as possible. Persons creating a continual disturbance will be asked to cease their activities or leave the lab.

Pagers and cell phones should be used outside of the lab. Pagers and cell phones should be set to silent mode. Lab users should leave the lab to answer all pages and calls so that they do not disturb others.

Parents are responsible for their children. Children who accompany their parents to the labs are expected to abide by computer lab guidelines. Parents are expected to ensure that their children do not create disturbances in the lab. If a child creates a continual disturbance, both the child and the parent will be asked to leave.

Viewing of pornographic or indecent material is prohibited. Since this is a public facility, all materials used in the lab must be for general audiences.

Food and drinks are prohibited in the lab. Food and drink must be finished prior to entering the lab.

Computers should not be left unattended. Unattended computers will be made available to other users if left unattended for more than 15 minutes. Items left behind will be transferred to the Lost and Found area in LC 1600.

Computers

Installation of software is prohibited. Games, utilities, instant messaging services, and download services (e.g. Kazaa, Gator) are all prohibited.

All files should be saved to a personal storage device or online storage space such as (OncourseCL). Recordable CDs and other removable devices can be purchased from the bookstore.

All removable media should be checked for viruses. To avoid the spread of computer viruses, the use of virus detection software is required each time any removable media is used. This software is provided on the desktop machines.

Copying software is prohibited and punishable by law. Lab users found copying software may be subject to expulsion from the university.

Printers

Paper and toner must be conserved. Printing should be kept to a minimum. The Columbus Campus has implemented a print quota system. Each student is allotted 400 pages per semester. Once the allotted quota has been reached, additional prints can be purchased at the front desk of the Information Commons (LC 1600).

Loading paper or other print material into the printer is prohibited. Specialty papers such as those used for resumes tend to get jammed in fast-printing, high-capacity printers. Transparencies are especially problematic as they can melt inside the printer.

The printer should not be used as a copier. The printer is for original printouts. Copies can be made using the copiers located the information Commons area (LC 1624).

If you have any questions, please contact the IT Support Center at ext. 8600 or in LC 1511
