Library Instruction
The Shoulds,
Musts and Wills
of Library Instruction
Sessions
Requests should be made at least two weeks prior to the desired date. We can not guarantee that we will be able to fit your class in without advanced notice.
- Faulty members must attend the session
with their students.
- Library instruction sessions will only be
given if students are working on an
assignment that requires the use of library resources.
Study after study has shown that library instruction sessions not tied to an assignment have little or no value for students!!!
- Instructors must send a separate form
for each instruction session requested.

If it has been a while since you last stepped into a library, you may be surprised what has changed. Technology, especially computers, have made information easier to retrieve. No longer does a student have to go blind trying to find citations in a periodical index or spend hours searching the card catalog. Instead, in a few keystrokes a student can find a plethora of information. As long as they know where to look!

Unfortunately, the information students find today is often unreliable. To make matters worse, many students cannot evaluate the information they find and often use unreliable resources, such as Wikipedia in their research papers. That is why we need librarians to teach others how to access and evaluate the mountains of information available today. The librarians at the University Library of Columbus are ready, willing and excited about teaching you and your students how to do research in today’s world and to direct your students toward quality online databases and other resources specific to their topic.
