Who May Use the Library?
The Library/CTL serves the students, faculty, and staff of IUPUC and Ivy Tech Community College. In accordance with the IUPUC mission, the library also serves as a resource for the residents of the Columbus area and the state of Indiana. Privileges will vary according to the status of the user. All patrons must present a valid library borrower's card in order to check out materials from the library. No other forms of ID will be accepted for checking out materials.

The Indiana University Libraries Borrower's Card is valid in all Indiana University system libraries; however the associated privileges will vary from library to library. Ivy Tech users may be asked to present a photo ID along with their borrower's card the first time they use it in another Ivy Tech Library.

How to obtain a Borrower's Card
Residents of the State of Indiana over the age of 16 can get an Indiana University Libraries Borrower's Card by presenting their Indiana Driver's License or other acceptable proof of identity and residency at the circulation desk.

Lending Period and Borrowing Privileges
Borrowing materials from the Library/CTL is considered a privilege rather than a right. Lending periods and borrowing privileges vary according to the status of the user, but the use of a valid borrower's card to check out materials implies acceptance by the borrower to abide by the assigned due dates and to return the materials in good order. Failure to meet either condition may result in fines and/or the loss of privileges.

Status Loan Period Borrowing Limits
Faculty 120 days 500 items
Graduate Students 120 days 250 items
University Staff 120 days 250 items
Undergraduate Students 45 days 100 items
Indiana Residents 30 days 50 items

Fine Schedule
Category Fine Rate
General Circulating Materials $ 0.25 per day
Course Reserves, hourly loan $ 1.20 per hour
Course Reserves, day loan $ 1.20 per hour
Interlibrary Loan Materials $ 1.20 per day
Lost book charge $50.00 or actual replacement cost, which ever is greater
Bill Processing charge $10.50

Lost or non-returned materials are billed the $10.50 bill processing charge, a replacement charge of $50.00 (or the actual replacement cost of the item, whichever is greater) plus any applicable fines. Users may receive a refund for the replacement cost of a billed item if it is returned to the Library/CTL within one (1) year of the billing date. Materials returned after that date will not receive a refund. The bill processing charge and fines are not refunded.

Notices:
Overdue notices are distributed only as a courtesy reminder using the email or US Mail address on file. If you do not receive the notices, you are still responsible for returning all library materials by the due date and are subject to all fines incurred. It is the responsibility of the borrower to notify the library of any address changes so that you may receive courtesy notifications of overdue materials or fines owed.

Email subscribers will receive "reminder" notices instead of overdue notices. These reminders will be e-mailed out seven (7) days before the items are due, allowing subscribers the chance to renew their materials before fines kick in. The library also reserves the right to block the system-wide library privileges of any user if the email or US Mail address on file is no longer valid.

Recalls:
All library materials are subject to recall after two weeks. Materials needed for Course Reserves may be recalled at any time. Interlibrary loan materials may be recalled at any time. Failure to return a recalled item by the recall due date will result in a minimum of a $25 fine and the suspension of borrowing privileges.

Renewals:
  • Renewal requests are accepted for most items.
  • Renewals are usually granted, unless the item has been recalled or is needed for reserves.
  • Request renewals early to avoid daily fines.
  • Overdue materials may be renewed as long as the materials have not been billed, however daily fines will apply if the renewal is not requested before the due date.
  • Billed materials will not be renewed.
  • The length of the renewal depends upon the status of the borrower and the type of material. Normally, this period is the same as the original chargeout period.
  • Items may be renewed in person at the library, by calling the library's circulation desk at (812) 314-8703, or online using the MyAccount feature in IUCAT.

Group Study Rooms:

The Group Study Rooms in the Library / CTL Information Commons are available on a first come, first serve basis. Unoccupied rooms will be viewed as available, and will be made available to others who need them. Materials left in an unoccupied room will be turned over to Lost & Found.

The Professional Development Lab (LC1616) is for faculty and staff use.  It also contains faculty and staff offices.  Faculty may bring their students to the lab for class sessions, but must notify Kyle in advance.  Students may not reserve the lab and may only use it when they are accompanied by their instructor.

All other rooms are available on a reservation basis only.
