To be eligible to apply to IU School of Nursing at IUPUC, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be admitted to Indiana University as a degree-seeking student. If you’ve not yet applied for university admission, click Apply Now.
- Complete, or be in the process of completing, the 29-31 credit hours of courses required for application (see above section) with minimum grades of C (C- not acceptable).
- Maintain a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale. Note: grades earned in transfer courses are not included in IU Cumulative GPA.
- Achieve a minimum pre-Nursing GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale. Pre-Nursing GPA is calculated on grades earned in the 29-31 credit hours of courses required for application (see above section). Note: grades earned in transfer courses used to meet application requirements are included in pre-Nursing GPA.
- Earn a grade of C or higher in each course required for application by the second completed attempt. Two failures (C- or below) in a required course render an applicant permanently ineligible.
- Repeat no more than 3 courses required for application (only 2 may be required science/math courses), in order to earn a satisfactory (C or higher) grade. This criterion also applies to transfer courses.
- Complete all courses required for application, including independent study and/or incomplete courses (grade of I), by the end of spring semester.
- Demonstrate chemistry competency. This requirement may be met with two semesters of high school chemistry with C or higher each semester, or one semester of college chemistry with C or higher. Note: college chemistry may also be used to meet the Critical/Analytical/Science course requirement.
Note: meeting minimum eligibility requirements is necessary for admission
consideration but does not guarantee admission to the program.
60% - Pre-Nursing GPA. Sixty percent of an applicant’s admission score is based on
pre-Nursing GPA. Pre-Nursing GPA is calculated on grades earned in the courses
required for application:

40% - Interview. Forty percent of an applicant’s admission score is based on an
interview with a panel composed of nursing faculty, alumni, and/or community nursing partners.
The application essay is a scored component of the interview. Interview opportunities may be
limited to the top 75% of applicants based on pre-Nursing GPA.

Applicants fall into categories A, B, or C. Admission consideration will be given to qualified
applicants in category A before considering qualified applicants from categories B and C.
Category A - applicants who have completed over half (51% or more) of the credit hours required for
application at IUPUC (Columbus), IUPUI (Indianapolis), and/or IUB (Bloomington).
Category B - applicants who have completed over half (51% or more) of the credit hours required for
application at an IU campus other than IUPUC, IUPUI, and/or IUB (i.e. IU Northwest, IU South Bend,
IU Kokomo, IU East, IU Southeast).
Category C - applicants who have completed over half (51% or more) of the credit hours required for
application at a school outside the IU educational system (for example, Purdue University or
Ivy Tech Community College).
Applicants in Category A (see above), who have completed at least 12 credit hours of prerequisite
coursework at IUPUC and/or whose permanent residence is in the Indiana Workforce Region 9 service
area (Bartholomew, Dearborn, Decatur, Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Jennings, Ohio, Ripley,
Switzerland), will receive preference for the nursing program offered by IU School of Nursing at IUPUC.
| Student Handbook and Essential Abilities Policy |
The IU School of Nursing Student Handbook contains detailed information about the BSN program:
Handbook (pdf)
The School of Nursing faculty has specified essential abilities (included in handbook) critical to the
success of students in the IU nursing program. Each student who enters the program must sign an
Essential Abilities form, which will be kept in the student’s permanent file.
In order to use grades earned in courses completed during spring semester, each applicant’s
pre-Nursing GPA will be calculated at the conclusion of spring semester. Applications are
then ranked within application categories according to admission score. Notification letters
will be mailed in June for fall semester admission.
We encourage all applicants to develop a backup plan in case they are not offered admission.
Some students may choose to continue taking general education courses with the intention of
applying at another time. Other students may choose to change majors and/or schools if not
admitted. Once you learn your final admission status, follow schedule adjustment procedures
to update your registration in accordance with your plans.
| Transferring to Other IU Nursing Programs |
Accepting admission into IU School of Nursing at IUPUC means that you intend to attend and
graduate from the nursing program at IUPUC. Opportunities to transfer into nursing programs
at IUB or IUPUI are rare. We strongly recommend that you do not apply for admission to
IUPUC’s nursing program if your goal is to transfer to nursing programs at other IU campuses.
Although there is no limit on the number of times you can apply for admission, there is a
limit on the number of offers of admission that you can turn down. Students who refuse an
offer of admission two times are ineligible for future BSN admission at any Indiana University campus.
