First-Year Seminar

First Year Seminar

The University College team delivers a seminar (UCOL-U 110) for first-year students that is designed to help ensure your college career at Indiana University Columbus gets off to a great start.

Who needs to take a First Year Seminar course?

This course is required for all beginning students and those who transfer to IU Columbus with fewer than 12 credit hours. Because the course is designed for new students, you will typically take it during your first semester of classes. Your academic advisor will introduce you to this course during your first advising appointment.

Your First Year Seminar introduces key information and campus resources you need for academic success.

About your First Year Seminar

During your UCOL-U 110 course, you will have opportunities to make important connections with faculty, staff, and fellow students. The small classroom format also provides opportunities for you to ask questions and receive individual advising. Our goal is to ensure you have plenty of opportunities for open inquiries and dialog through seminar discussions.

About your instructor

U 110 instructors are chosen because they want to work with first-year students and offer advice and guidance to help you achieve your college goals. In addition to helping you with study techniques, networking skills, and time management, you will learn about leadership opportunities and social opportunities that can enrich your student experience. You will also be paired with a Peer Mentor who will participate in the seminar with you.
