A college education should be more than just sitting in a classroom and at IUPUC there are a number of opportunities for students to get real-world experience to prepare for the career that lies ahead. These types of learning experiences include internships, student teaching, nursing clinicals, the IU officer cadet program, student research, study abroad and even campus jobs.
Experiential Learning at IUPUC
Internships
An internship is an effective way of gaining experience and test-driving a job or a career of interest. Students can earn class credit and sometimes even get paid while completing their internships, which usually require a 10-15 hour per week commitment throughout the semester, or summer. The Office of Career Services can help you find the right fit for your skills and career aspirations.

Elementary Eductation
For students who want a teaching career, IUPUC puts you into an elementary school classroom right from the start. First-year students will spend time at local schools observing classrooms, interviewing teachers, and even helping with lessons on occasion. During their final semester, all teacher-candidates complete sixteen weeks of student teaching in a local elementary school, providing them with the opportunity to connect theory to practice and apply what they have learned in their content and education courses.

Nursing Clinicals
Students working toward a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (B.S.N.) are required to take clinical coursework which puts them into the field for hands-on experience at one of IUPUC’s regional healthcare partners.

IU Cadet Officer Program
The Cadet Officer Program, normally two years in length, allows full-time Indiana University students to work in the criminal justice system and in a law enforcement agency while pursuing their degree.
Completion of the Cadet Officer Program, which includes the Indiana University Police Academy, provides comprehensive and unique law enforcement training which, coupled with the university's educational programs, produces a highly qualified, experienced, and educated law enforcement professional.

Student Research
The Office of Student Research (OSR) promotes intellectual inquiry and innovation to enrich the educational experiences of students by providing support for research projects that engage them in academic scholarship that contributes in meaningful ways to communities in south central Indiana and beyond.

Study Abroad
Students at IUPUC have access to more than 380 study abroad programs across the IU system, including those at IUPUI and IU Bloomington. Program lengths range from a few days to an entire semester.
In addition, several divisions at IUPUC also offer study abroad opportunities in conjunction with specific courses.
