Would you like to help new, incoming students taking a first-year seminar (FYS) course be academically successful? Consider becoming a peer mentor! If selected, you will be hired for the fall 2019 semester and be eligible to continue during the spring 2020 semester.

What is a Peer Mentor?
Serving as a peer mentor is a great leadership opportunity that will help you build lifelong skills, like effective communication, collaborative teamwork, group facilitation, and establishing positive relationships. If you become a mentor, you will serve as a mentor to incoming freshmen, and collaborate with an instructor to co-teach a FYS course. Your participation is a good resume-builder that will help make you marketable among future employers.
Peer mentor positions require about three to five hours per week for the fall semester. There is also an opportunity to participate during the spring semester (pending availability of FYS sections).
If you are chosen to be a peer mentor, you will demonstrate the ability to:
- Serve as an appropriate role model for new students, both inside and outside the classroom. You maintain academic eligibility, make responsible decisions, and build professional relationships. In addition, you fully participate in class discussions and activities by attending scheduled classes, being prepared before classes begin, adhering to university policies, and maintaining a positive attitude.
- Be an approachable resource for students by being familiar with campus policies, events, activities, and services (making appropriate referrals when necessary). You support new students by helping them build good relationships with instructors. You are a good listener who is sensitive to the personal nature of what new students may share about themselves or challenges they are facing. You keep personal information strictly confidential.
- Facilitate learning for your students by building a community, contributing ideas for assignments and activities, and leading class discussions. You seek to create fun, engaging, and challenging learning environments, focusing on students as individuals by knowing their names and backgrounds. You are aware of and attentive to issues of diversity and multiculturalism within the seminar group.
Fall 2019 Applications
Applications for Fall 2019 are due February 9, 2019.
Here is the approximate timeline for selecting fall mentors. These dates are subject to change:
- February 9: Application deadline
- Beginning February 11: Applicants will be notified by e-mail if they are selected for an interview
- First week of March: Interviews will be held
- April 10: Selection choices will be notified - all selections are pending placement with a first year seminar
- May 23: Spring training session
- July 24-25th: Fall Training/First Year Student Early Start
- July 30: Meet & Greet for instructors and Peer Mentors
- August 13*: Tour de Tuesday
- August 19: First day of classes
- Peer Mentor Meetings are held monthly throughout the fall semester
NOTE: Dates marked with an asterisk (*) are tentative and subject to change.
If you are selected as a peer mentor during the fall 2019 semester, you will be hired at an hourly wage of $10.15. All trainings are paid. In addition, you may have the opportunity to serve again as a mentor for the spring 2020 semester. Hiring offers are contingent on successful course section matching. Before you complete the application process be sure you meet the eligibility requirements.
