Policy

In order for faculty, staff, and students to have the best experience when utilizing Indiana University information technology resources, the University Information Technology Services (UITS) at IUPUC has adopted the following policies. Please familiarize yourself with them.

Computer Policies

  • Computers in campus computer labs are made available to other users if left unattended for more than 15 minutes. Items left behind will be taken to the lost and found desk in LC Room 1600.
  • Due to potential security risks and abuses, the use of wired network connections for other than university-owned equipment is prohibited.
  • Viewing of pornographic or indecent material is prohibited. Since IUPUC is a public facility, all materials used in the lab must be for general audiences.

Priorities

Academic computing needs have first priority at IUPUC. Utilization of campus computers for nonacademic activities is only permitted when they aren't needed by facutly, staff, or students who need form for teaching and learning purposes (academic work).

File Management

You may not save files to university-owned computers. All files should be saved to a personal storage device or online storage space such as (OncourseCL).

  • Recordable CDs and other removable devices can be purchased from the bookstore.
  • To avoid the spread of computer viruses, software loaded on computer lab desktop machines scans all removable media for viruses.

Software

Copying software is prohibited and punishable by law. Lab users found copying software may be subject to expulsion from the university.

  • Installation of software is prohibited.
  • Games, utilities, instant messaging services, and download services such as Kazaa and Gator are all prohibited.

Scheduling Campus Computer Labs

To utilize a campus computer lab, the room must be scheduled by an authorized faculty or staff member.

  • Labs are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Regularly scheduled classes are given first priority; labs are available for student use when classes are not scheduled.
  • Public computer access is available in the Columbus Learning Center's information commons (LC Room 1600).

Printing

In order to conserve paper and toner, UITS has implemented a printing quota system.

  • Each student is allotted 650 pages per semester.
  • Once the allotted quotas have been reached, additional printing can be purchased at the front desk in the Columbus Learning Center's information commons (LC Room 1600).

Loading your own materials or paper into campus printers is prohibited.

  • Specialty papers such as those used for resumes tend to get jammed in fast-printing, high-capacity printers.
  • Transparencies are especially problematic because they can melt inside printers.

Printers should be used for printing an original copy of a document(s). You can make additional copies of a document(s) on copiers located in LC Room 1624.
