The University Library of Columbus is now closed until further notice. We will reopen when the campus resumes normal operations or if requested to do so by the Vice Chancellor.
For the duration of the Spring 2020 semester, classes will continue in an e-learning environment to allow faculty to keep teaching and students to keep learning. Please see coronavirus.iu.edu for more information.
Library services that will continue to be available include:
- Virtual reference and research help via email and phone
- Zoom research consultations and instructional support
- Access to electronic books, journals, and database subscriptions
- Interlibrary loan of electronic articles and book chapters
The best way to contact the library for research assistance is to fill out an Ask A Librarian form. You may also contact us via phone at 812-375-7570. Additionally, we are able to meet with you for in depth research help via Zoom. Please contact us through the Ask A Librarian form to schedule a Zoom research consultation.
Access to electronic books, journals, and database subscriptions
The databases, journals, and e-books to which the library subscribes will remain accessible to you. If you are not accustomed to accessing these resources from off campus, you may want to refer to this IU Knowledge Base article, About the IU VPN. IU has recently changed its VPN configuration, so it is important you start your research at the library's homepage when you want to find full text articles and other online materials. Resources like Google Scholar may not work as well from off campus. If you have issues connecting to library resources remotely, please send an Ask A Librarian request with details about your access issue and we will help you troubleshoot the problem.
We are aware that many of our information providers are experiencing higher than normal usage. As a result, some databases are down. We are keeping track of all of these instances at our Tech Issues page.
Vendors of library materials having been making statements on the pandemic as well. See our page with vendor responses for more information including extended access to databases courtesy of information vendors and publishers.
Borrowing, renewing, and returning materials and fines
Our physical collections, searchable through IUCAT, are not available due to library closures.
Please renew your materials as you are able via the My Account feature in IUCAT. Fines accrued on items you have checked out from Indiana University libraries will be waived for the remainder of the semester. Materials may be returned to the drive-up Book Drop box located on the sidewalk between the Learning Center and IUPUC buildings at your convenience.
We will continue to attempt to fill article and book chapter requests from patrons electronically, though availability and delivery time may be affected by other libraries’ closures. Requests for physical materials (i.e. books, DVDs, etc.) will not be accepted until further notice. If there are physical materials you need to complete your coursework, please contact Emily Dill (firstname.lastname@example.org) and we will attempt to purchase an electronic version (if available) to ensure the item becomes available to you in a timely manner.
Librarians are available for Zoom and asynchronous instruction. Please reach out to Emily Dill (email@example.com) to schedule a session or arrange for asynchronous materials, such as tutorials, to be added to your Canvas course site.
