In conjunction with a fall semester special studies course, IUPUC is proud to present the Tennessee Williams Film Series at YES Cinema with free screenings of four films based on the plays of one of America’s most influential playwrights, Tennessee Williams.
All showings are FREE and open to the public.
After Brick Pollitt injures himself while drunkenly revisiting his high school sports-star days, he and his tempestuous wife, Maggie, visit his family's Mississippi plantation for the 65th birthday of his hot-tempered father, Big Daddy. Cantankerous even with declining health, Big Daddy demands to know why Brick and Maggie haven't yet given him a grandchild, unlike Brick's brother Gooper and his fecund wife, Mae.

Uptight single woman Alma Winemiller carries a torch for the boy next door, John Buchanan Jr., who has grown up into dashing doctor. An unabashed hedonist, John falls for the sensual Rosa Zacharias (Rita Moreno) and enjoys carefree nights out on the town, an approach to life that starkly contrasts with Alma's reserved manner. While Alma attempts to come out of her shell, John also reconsiders his impulsive ways, leading to the possibility of romance.

Based on the play 27 Wagons Full of Cotton by Tennessee Williams, Baby Doll centers on Archie Lee Meighan, a failing cotton gin owner who is married to Baby Doll, a 19-year old childlike beauty whose father arranged the marriage for financial reasons. As Archie awaits the arrival of Baby Doll's 20th birthday, the day that they are supposed to consummate their marriage, he faces interference from business rival Silva Vacarro, who plots to seduce Baby Doll away from Meighan.
