January 23, 2015

Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC) has recognized Julie Goodspeed-Chadwick, associate professor of English at IUPUC and Director of the Office of Student Research, as the recipient of its 2015 Excellence in Diversity Award.

The announcement was made during IUPUC’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day recognition held Monday at the Columbus Learning Center with about 70 faculty, staff, students, and community residents in attendance.

“Goodspeed-Chadwick’s teaching, scholarly publications, and service have been supportive of IUPUC’s commitment to diversity,” says Dr. Marwan Wafa, Vice Chancellor and Dean of IUPUC. “Her advocacy of diversity in teaching and research relates to women’s studies, race and ethnicity, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation, and social justice. She serves as the Feminism Student Club advisor. We are proud of her dedication in the classroom as well as the community.”

Dr. Julie Goodspeed-Chadwick specializes in twentieth-century American literature, transatlantic modernism, women and literature, and American ethnic literature. Her research focuses on identity politics, particularly the politics inherent in identity constructions, and responses to trauma in modern and contemporary literature. Goodspeed-Chadwick says, “Much of my research treats social justice issues, particularly in connection with bodies marked by gender, race, and trauma.” As a scholar and teacher, she aims to bring work and ideas that invigorate her research into the classroom. Students in her classes gain new perspectives and insight because they learn to consider and analyze texts and contexts, and, by extension, themselves, their world, and people different from themselves.
