100 iGrad students attend career exploration workshop at IUPUC

April 1, 2015

Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC) hosted 100 high school students in the iGrad program for a Career Exploration Workshop on Friday, April 3.

The workshop was facilitated by graduate students enrolled in IUPUC’s Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling program as part of their training in career counseling. The iGrad students, from Columbus North, Columbus East and Columbus Signature Academy, spent the day at IUPUC learning how their interests can translate into career and post-high school education options by completing various career assessments. Participants also heard from college students who overcame life obstacles to successfully complete high school and attend college.

At a future date, each student will meet with an IUPUC graduate student and their iGrad coach to review their assessment data and create an individual career plan that can facilitate progress toward individual life goals.

“We know that having a clear picture of one’s vocational future can contribute to student retention and success in both high school and college,” said Darrin Carr, PhD, Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychology at IUPUC. “This effort is a “win-win” as it provides a great experience for both iGrad students and our graduate students.”
