Author Claire Arbogast to visit English classes on Thursday

September 19, 2016

Claire S. Arbogast, whose memoir, Leave the Dogs at Home, will visit Dr. Lisa Siefker Bailey’s English classes on Thursday, Sept. 22.

Bailey’s Reading, Writing, and Inquiry class is currently reading the memoir. She hopes that through the visit students will learn that all authors go through the same writing process that they do. Students will be encouraged to ask Arbogast questions about the writing process and rhetorical choices, as well as content questions.

Arbogast writes about her unconventional long-term relationship as well as about how people react when dealing with terminal illness, death, and dying.

“Students have been reading deeply and a thinking critically about these topics,” says Bailey, “and I anticipate that they will bring their lively discussion to a new level when they share their ideas and questions with Arbogast herself. Knowing they will have the opportunity to interact with the author has inspired my students to participate in particularly genuine ways with profound ideas inspired by the memoir, and I think having the opportunity to share strong responses with the author in the flesh will make for memorable experiential learning in my classroom.”

Claire Arbogast is a graduate of Indiana University. Her memoir, Leave the Dogs at Home, was recently published by Break Away Books, IU Press (ISBN is 978-0-253-01719-2).
