Meet IUPUC’s new Communications Studies faculty

New to IUPUC’s Communication Studies Program are assistant professors Dr. Kristen Cole and Dr. Pamela Morris.

Dr. Kristen Cole
IUPUC, Assistant Professor, Communication Studies

Dr. Kristen Cole received a PhD in Communication, with a graduate certificate in women’s studies, from the University of New Mexico, an MA in communication from Colorado State University, and a BA in communication from San Diego State University. Prior to joining IUPUC she was a visiting assistant professor in communication at Denison University.

Cole shares, “My teaching and research lead me to explore how communication in various contexts restricts and promotes a multiplicity of lived experiences. I utilize critical, rhetorical, and qualitative methodologies to investigate rhetorics of identity and pathology; Specifically, the ways mediated representations of gender, race, sexuality, and disability construct and disrupt perceptions, norms, and ways of knowing.”

Dr. Pamela Morris

Dr. Pamela Morris received a Ph.D. from Purdue University in communication with a major in media technology and society and a minor in organizational communications and research methods, her M.S. is in computer and information services and she received a B.S is from Michigan Technological University in computer science and scientific and technical communication.

Furthermore, Morris studied computer science and worked at IBM for 12 years as a programmer and project manager. She shares, “This inspired me to I specialize in media studies and new media. My primary research interests are virtual work, technology adoption and adaptation including media law, and the uses and effects of technology on communication processes. My current research projects include investigating the use of social media between instructors and students and the effects of technology on student-parent communication in college. I particularly enjoy teaching and am passionate about media literacy education and making students good digital citizens.”

Dr. George Towers, Head of the Division of Liberal Arts, adds: “Dr. Anna Carmon, the Director of the Communication Studies Program, and I feel very fortunate that Dr. Cole and Dr. Morris have chosen to join us at IUPUC. Both are first-rate university faculty with extensive teaching experience and impressive research accomplishments. They also share a strong service ethic and a passion for promoting student success in the classroom and in the community.”

The Division of Liberal Arts at IUPUC offers programs in:

o   Digital and Professional Writing - minor

  • Sociology - Bachelor of Arts, and minor

     o   Medical sociology – minor

  • Women’s studies – minor

Additionally, a substantial portion of prerequisite or required courses for a wide variety of liberal arts majors may be completed at IUPUC, then transferred to IUPUI or another IU campus to complete a bachelor’s degree.
