Public safety exercise to be held July 17

July 14, 2014

A full-scale public safety exercise will take place on the Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC) campus Thursday, July 17 between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m.

Exercise personnel, including university officials and local emergency responders, will conduct much of the exercise outside, where activities may be visible by members of the public. The drill will include mock “victims,” some of whom may appear to have sustained serious bodily injuries or otherwise seem to be in danger.

During this time, members of the news media, area homeowners, and the general public are advised there is no cause for alarm if they see or hear:

  • Uniformed police, fire, and emergency response personnel on the IUPUC campus
  • Students, faculty, staff, and others who appear to be bleeding or have visible injuries
  • Sirens from ambulances and emergency response vehicles
  • Fire alarms sounding on campus
  • Reports of an emergency on police or fire scanners

The purpose of the exercise is to practice and evaluate response procedures focusing on multi-agency coordination and overall emergency management. Representatives from local, county, and state public safety agencies will participate, including:

  • American Red Cross
  • Bartholomew County Emergency Management Agency
  • Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department
  • Columbus Police Department
  • Columbus Fire Department
  • Columbus Regional Health
  • Indiana National Guard
  • Indiana State Police
  • Indiana University Emergency Management & Continuity
  • Indiana University Police Department
