Mary Ann Nunn awarded James G. Simms Leadership Award

November 11, 2016

Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC) honored Mary Ann Nunn with the 2016 James G. Simms Leadership Award during its annual Circle of Leadership Celebration on November 10 at Harrison Lake Country Club.  The award—established in honor of the late James G. Simms for his vision, perseverance, and dedication in founding the IUPUC campus in the 1970s—recognizes inspiring individuals who have generously given their time, talent, and treasure to advance IUPUC’s mission.

Nunn has long been a devoted volunteer, supporter, and advocate for IUPUC. An IUPUC alumna, Nunn has supported the University through her volunteerism on multiple boards and committees and has secured gifts for IUPUC both personally and through her professional affiliations.

Mary Ann has served on the IUPUC Alumni Association Board, the IUPUC Board of Advisors, and the IUPUC Division of Business Advisory Council. Over the years, she has actively engaged with students on campus and spent countless hours mentoring students, spearheading powerful discussions, and organizing alumni events.

In addition to Mary Ann’s personal commitment, she serves as chairperson of the Carl and Mildred Reeves Foundation. She passionately advocates for IUPUC, to date securing nearly $1M in direct support for the campus from the Reeves Foundation. In presenting the Simms Award to Nunn, Brenda Vogel, Director of Development and External Affairs at IUPUC said, “From the 35 foot stainless and glass sculpture that adorns the campus entrance to the new distance learning classroom, Mary Ann’s advocacy has made real impact on our campus, our students, and our educational community.”

Pastor Doug Bauman, St Paul Lutheran Church, shared, “Mary Ann served on the church’s finance committee for the construction of our new church. Her love for her Lord and dedication to our congregation reveal her Christ-like servant leadership, generously giving of her time and talents.”

Another personal reflection comes from Sharon Mangus, another IUPUC alum. “Mary Ann grew up in Columbus. She has great affection for her hometown and is passionate about seeing that young people in Bartholomew County, and surrounding counties, are given the opportunity to get a college education. Mary Ann is a “hands on” person and has given a great deal of her time to the IUPUC campus. Her wise counsel is valued. She is one of the most intelligent and capable women I’ve ever met. IUPUC is fortunate indeed to have Mary Ann Nunn as a friend of the campus.”
