IUPUC students create an exhibition on authors Plath and Wevill

November 16, 2016

Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus students from the IUPUC, Liberal Arts English L-431 course, Sylvia Plath Studies, created an exhibition on authors Sylvia Plath and Assia Wevill featured in the University Library of Columbus at the Columbus Learning Center.

The library’s executive director Emily Dill shares, “This exhibit is truly impressive. I want to encourage everyone to stop by within the next month to see our newest book display, Breaking the Rules of the Game: Changing the Narrative of Sylvia Plath and Assia Wevill. IUPUC undergraduates, from Dr. Julie Goodspeed-Chadwick’s English class, created the exhibit and in my opinion, the display epitomizes how thoughtful, creative, and engaged the students at IUPUC truly are.”

Student participants in the research and presentation are currently enrolled in the Liberal Arts English program and include Amanda Ballard, Bailey Burnett, Emily Pedigo, Alicca Rice, Melissa Sinclair, and Courtney Watkins.”

The student's initial intention was in developing a display that would allow viewers to gain an in-depth perspective that goes beyond the traditional perception of Sylvia Plath and Assia Wevill. To accomplish their objective, students researched archived materials and published works that ultimately resulted in a wealth of information.

According to Goodspeed-Chadwick through the student research and their exhibit, “Viewers will form new impressions and ideas about Plath and Ted Hughes, as well as to learn about the important artistic contributions and influence of Assia Wevill. Ultimately, the curators of the exhibit have delivered a feminist appraisal of the lives and work of these three important figures in literature and cultural studies.”

Additionally, shares Goodspeed-Chadwick, “The Pulitzer Prize-winning American poet and novelist Sylvia Plath would have turned 84 on October 27 this year if she hadn’t committed suicide at the age of 30. What she left behind are some of the most treasured and brilliant writings in twentieth-century literature. To commemorate her work, the University Library of Columbus and the IUPUC English L-431 course Sylvia Plath Studies partnered to present a mounted Library exhibition titled Breaking the Rules of the Game: Changing the Narrative of Sylvia Plath and Assia Wevill.”
