As plans evolve and activity's present themselves, we are hoping to find ways to incorporate more sustainability efforts in the following areas:
Earth Day is an annual event that occurs globally on April 22nd. Various events are held across the world to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Earth day promotes awareness of environmental challenges. Earth Day Network works year round to solve climate change, to end plastic pollution, to protect endangered species, and to broaden, educate, and activate the environmental movment across the globe. We would like to incorporate ways in which IUPUC can become supportive and active on this day, and perhaps throughout that week. See this link for more information about the global Earth Day Network: https://www.earthday.org/
As Earth Day moves towards its 50th anniversary in 2020, perhaps we can incorporate something to match with our IUPUC 50 year anniversary in 2020.
IUPUC will be participating in Arbor Day this coming year. That day is April 26, 2019. We will be planning a planting event by planting several trees to celebrate the 'role' of trees in our lives and to recognize environmental stewardship.
The Oasis Café’:
The Oasis Cafe' is using recycled napkins, however we would like to see the move to biodegradable plates, cups, and who knows maybe even straws.
Being in a rural area, we are hoping to make some purchases from local farmers to use in our Cafe' to offer to students, employees, and our local campus community. These types of purchases helps with carbon footprint. We will be looking at ways to incorporate this into our campus in the future.
Outdoor stretching area:
Regular stretching is good for the muscles, for blood flow and overall health. Fresh air is good for the brain. We want to offer an area outside for stretching and a moment to pause from work and school stress. By helping to provide health and wellbeing options, we will be able to create an environment for sustainability of employees, students, and community.
We will be looking into being able to offer courses in sustainability that may have to do with global climate change, or how to go green, and maybe at some time offer a certificate in sustainability.
