IUPUC Hosts Alumni Panel Discussion on Feb. 20

Indiana University-Purdue University (IUPUC) Alumni will co-sponsor an alumni panel discussion as part of IUPUC’s Homecoming events. The panel includes five successful alumni from Liberal Arts, General Studies, Education, and Business.

The community is invited to this panel discussion on Friday, Feb. 20 at the Columbus Learning Center in the Lecture Hall. The event, which includes lunch, is from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The discussion will include questions on why the panelists each chose IUPUC, their individual experiences here, how IUPUC has helped them pursue their goals and what their goals are for the future. After the panel discussion concludes, the floor will open to questions from the audience.  

Our alumni panelists include:

Dr. Virgil Hill, B.A. Psychology IUPUC 1997, MA Clinical Psychology Midwestern State, Ph.D. Social-Personality Psychology University of Oklahoma and is an Associate Professor & Director of Graduate Training at Oakland University in MI. He has published over 120 articles and book chapters & edited three books. Dr. Hill currently is an Associate Editor for three journals.

Jennifer Hiat Dettmer, B.S. Education IUPUC 2002, MS in Elementary Education with a certification for Education Leadership at Indiana University South East and is the principal at Rockcreek Elementary in Columbus, Indiana. Prior to her current appointment, she spent nine years in the classroom and two years as an assistant principal within Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation. While in the classroom she was awarded the William and Sally Hanley Teaching Excellence Award.

The Honorable James Worton, A.S. Criminal Justice IU Bloomington 2003, B.G.S. Social & Behavioral Science IUPUC 2004, J.D. IU Law School Indianapolis 2008 and is judge for Bartholomew Superior Court 1. Jim was formerly with the Columbus Police Department for 20 years. He is an adjunct for both IUPUC and Ivy Tech teaching criminal justices courses.

Austin Bustle CMA, B.S. Business IUPUC 2011 and is a Senior Financial Analyst at Cummins, Inc. While a student at IUPUC, he received numerous awards and recognition including Outstanding Integrative Core Student and Outstanding Student in Finance. Austin is a trained Six Sigma Green Belt.

Leah Boas, BA Liberal Arts IUPUC 2011, M.S.W. IUPUI 2014 is the Aging Well Coordinator at Mill Race Center. Prior to becoming the Aging Well Coordinator, Leah spent 2 years working in comprehensive wellness at Mill Race Center and 7 years working at Foundation for Youth’s Boys and Girls Club. Leah is also a member of the Reach Healthy Communities Council, a community navigator, and is a Big with Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Moderator for the panel: Emily Hodnett, BA Communications IUPUC 2009 and is currently a Corporate College Recruiter for Cummins, Inc. Emily is the current president of the IUPUC Alumni Board. She formerly was the education coordinator for Bartholomew County Solid Waste Management District.
