Feb. 21 event at IU Columbus focuses on parenting biracial children

IU Columbus and the NAACP of Bartholomew County invite the community to attend “Living in the Middle: Parenting Across Color Lines,” an interactive discussion panel on Feb. 21. This event takes place 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Columbus Learning Center Summerville Room and is hosted by the IU Columbus Division of Liberal Arts and the Women In the NAACP (WIN) committee.
WIN Chairwoman Stephanie Carmer said her goal is to provide a safe space for parents and caregivers to learn, share, find resources and build networks.
Carmer added, "All parents earnestly want to provide their children with what they need to ensure they grow strong and confident. This can be difficult under the best circumstances, but throw in race, especially in a predominantly white environment, and I know help can be needed."
The Feb. 21 event will include time for questions, as well as information about local support and resources. No registration is required.
The Columbus Learning Center is located at 4555 Central Ave. This event is free and open to the public.
Organizers encourage members of biracial families to attend, as well as anyone interested in better understanding and supporting our local biracial community, including educators, health care workers, public service providers, friends and neighbors.
